What do you know about the UN Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. They’re a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

The 17 goals are: (1) No Poverty, (2) Zero Hunger, (3) Good Health and Well-being, (4) Quality Education, (5) Gender Equality, (6) Clean Water and Sanitation, (7) Affordable and Clean Energy, (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, (10) Reducing Inequality, (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities, (12) Responsible Consumption and Production, (13) Climate Action, (14) Life Below Water, (15) Life on Land, (16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, (17) Partnerships for the Goals.

Anchoring your ESG efforts to the SDGs will help give you direction, ensure you’re using your skills and expertise in the best way possible and drive engagement.

Use these questions to work out which goals make the most sense for your business to focus on.

• What sector is your business in and how does this align with the SDGs? For example, if you are a construction firm, goals 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12 and 15 would strongly align with your sector.

• What is your product or service offering, and how does this align with the SDGs? For example, if you produce a wellness product, goals 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 might jump out to you.

• Are there specific skills that your people have to share? For example, if you are a finance firm, goals 8 and 9, would be a great focus.

• Does your ESG framework have a specific focus? If so, align your work with the relevant SDGs to provide strategic support and to join the global community in working towards shared goals.
